Tips for Travel Nurses on Assignment
1. Research Your Assignment Location:
Learn about the city, neighborhood, and amenities to ensure you feel comfortable with the local area when you arrive.
2. Find Suitable Housing:
Use traveling nurse housing platforms like PadSplit for affordable, flexible rentals that allow you to stay on a weekly basis. Choose a place within a few miles of your assignment location to reduce commute times and spend less on transportation.
3. Stay Organized:
Maintain a file of important documents, such as licenses, certifications, and assignment contracts. Make digital backup copies to avoid lost information and reduce the number of papers you must transport when transferring to a new location for your traveling nurse assignment. You can also create a checklist for packing and ensure you have all necessary work-related items.
4. Pack Smart:
Pack work essentials, comfortable clothing, and personal care items while remaining conscious of traveling light. If needed, ship larger items to your new location.
5. Maintain a Routine:
Stick to a balanced diet, exercise regularly, and get enough sleep. Make time for relaxation and leisure activities for a proper work-life balance.
6. Network and Make Connections:
Introduce yourself to coworkers and join professional travel nurse groups or forums. Engage in community events and activities to build a support network in the local area.
7. Familiarize Yourself with Facility Policies:
Attend orientation sessions and familiarize yourself with hospital or clinic policies and procedures. Don’t hesitate to ask for clarification on anything you’re unsure about.
8. Stay Updated with Licensing and Certifications:
Ensure your nursing license and certifications are current and valid in the state of your assignment. Take advantage of online courses to fulfill continuing education requirements.
9. Budget and Manage Finances:
Keep a record of your income and expenses to stay on budget. Set aside funds for unexpected expenses or emergencies, especially if you have breaks between each assignment.
10. Take Care of Your Mental Health:
Practice stress-relief techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing exercises. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, contact friends, family, or a professional counselor.
11. Explore and Enjoy Your New Location:
Visit local attractions, parks, and restaurants to make the most of your time in a new city and learn more about the location. Engage in outdoor activities or join a local gym to stay active and healthy.
12. Stay Connected with Loved Ones:
Keep in touch with family and friends through calls, video chats, or social media. Schedule visits to or from loved ones during your travel nurse assignment to maintain your relationships and reduce feelings of loneliness or isolation.
13. Prepare for the Unexpected:
Have a plan in place for emergencies, including contact information for local services and support. Always provide your location and current address to your family members or friends.
