PadSplit strives to make secure, affordable housing accessible to those who need it most. While we welcome most applicants, we have specific eligibility requirements to promote the security and comfort of all members. Before you apply, review these guidelines to understand our qualification process and any factors that may impact your application.
Additionally, hosts may have their own criteria, which can differ from PadSplit’s requirements. Membership approval does not guarantee occupancy in a specific home.
1. Criminal history that poses a safety risk
To help maintain a secure community, we review all applicants’ background screenings, where available. While a criminal record doesn’t automatically disqualify you from membership, certain serious offenses may prevent approval:
- Violent crimes, including assault, robbery, or domestic violence
- Sexual offenses of any kind
- Recent felony convictions in the last seven years
- Property crimes, particularly arson or severe damage
We evaluate each application individually, considering the offense severity, time elapsed, and demonstrated rehabilitation.
2. Evictions or poor rental history
We review each applicant’s rental history to ensure reliable shared living arrangements. Your application may be affected if you have:
- Several evictions in recent years
- A pattern of late rent payments
- A history of property damage or lease violations
However, we recognize that circumstances change. If your past rental challenges are behind you and you can demonstrate improved financial stability, we encourage you to apply.
3. Unverifiable or insufficient income
While we don’t have minimum credit score requirements, you must demonstrate a reliable income to cover weekly payments. We may decline applications if:
- Your income can’t be verified
- Your earnings don’t meet the room’s affordability requirements
- Your employment history shows frequent job changes without stability
Working in the gig economy, freelancing, or running your own business? No problem – just show us consistent earnings through bank statements or invoices.
4. A history of problematic behavior in shared housing
Living at PadSplit means sharing space with others, so we look for residents who can contribute to a respectful community. We may decline applications from those with a history of:
- Aggressive or disruptive behavior in shared housing
- Multiple complaints from former roommates or landlords
- Breaking community guidelines in previous coliving situations
We prioritize creating peaceful homes where everyone feels comfortable and secure.
5. False or incomplete application information
Be upfront in your application. Concealing or misrepresenting information – like past evictions or criminal records – will lead to denial. We verify all details, and any discrepancies will disqualify you.
6. Owing a balance to PadSplit
Previous PadSplit members must clear any unpaid balances before applying again. We cannot approve your application until past debts are resolved.
What to do if you’re disqualified
Denied? Here’s how to move forward:
- Work on the specific reason for denial – for example, stabilize your income if that was the concern
- Clear up any past issues like evictions or unpaid balances
- Show us more documentation if we can’t verify your income
How does the application review process work?
We typically review applications within minutes, but some applications may require review for two to five days if we need to verify additional information. Submit complete, accurate details to avoid delays.
Not sure if you qualify?
Check our eligibility guidelines or contact our support team before applying. We’ll help clarify requirements and explain what documents you need. If denied, we’ll tell you why and whether you can reapply when circumstances change.
Understanding our review process
We review each application individually, looking at the full picture rather than using automatic disqualifications. Here are details about two common concerns:
1. Criminal history
A criminal record doesn’t automatically disqualify you. We evaluate:
- Offense type: Serious crimes like violence, sexual offenses, or arson face closer review
- Time passed: Recent convictions raise more concerns than those from 10+ years ago
- Your path forward: Completing probation, rehabilitation programs, and positive life changes to strengthen your application
Have a past conviction? Talk to our support team before applying to understand your options.
2. Past evictions
We look at the full story behind any evictions:
- The cause: Financial hardships are viewed differently than lease violations or property damage
- When it happened: Recent evictions (last 12 months) or multiple evictions raise more concerns
- Your recovery: Improved finances and positive rental history since then strengthen your case
Have you had a past eviction but been a good tenant since? Show us proof of steady income and positive landlord references to help your application.
We offer second chances when an submitting application
Life brings challenges, and setbacks don’t define you. Most disqualifications are temporary – you can reapply after making positive changes.
If denied, here’s your path forward:
- Learn why: We’ll explain our decision so you know what needs to change
- Address specific issues: Clear unpaid balances, verify income, or resolve past evictions
- Show your progress: Demonstrate financial responsibility and a good rental history
Working toward stability? We want to help you succeed. Contact our support team to discuss your situation and create a plan for approval.
